'Huge' Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho claim issued after Man United reveal - pundit

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford need to start the 2022-23 season “on fire” for Man United, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted the pair have “big seasons” ahead of them with the World Cup in the middle of it.

Sancho, 22, and Rashford, 24, have not played for England this calendar year and were excluded from the squad for the Nations League games this month.

As quoted by the Athletic on Monday (13 June), Gareth Southgate warned the duo they have a “lot to do” if they want to be on the plane for Qatar.

“They’ve got big seasons [ahead],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They need to start the season on fire. Southgate will not pick them unless they are absolutely tearing it up.

“In August, September and October they need to be on fire because they are a million miles away from that squad of players.

“I think it’s going to be a real battle in the first three months of the season. There will be so many players who will be thinking ‘I need to be on fire’. I’ve been there, you miss out on tournaments for England.

“Maybe half of the squad are guaranteed picks and the other half will be whoever is in the best form.”

Sancho and Rashford have 69 England caps between them and were part of the squad that reached the final of the Euros last summer (2021).

Along with Bukayo Saka, they both missed penalties as England lost to Italy in the final at Wembley.
