Hugo Ekitike breaks silence after ‘stupid’ Liverpool red card
Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike shared a message to supporters following his bizarre red card after scoring the winning goal against Southampton.
Liverpool beat Southampton with a 2-1 win at Anfield and advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup, thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Ekitike.
However, the Frenchman’s celebrations were quickly overshadowed as Ekitike was sent off for Liverpool after he removed his shirt following his goal, which meant he was booked for a second time.
The incident drew criticism in the aftermath, as Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson had called Ektitke’s incident “silly” while Arne Slot was also not impressed in his post-match interview, calling it “stupid”.
Despite the reaction, the 23-year-old acknowledged the frustrations and issued an apology on social media to supporters after the win.
Hugo Ekitike remains upbeat despite red card against Southampton
Ekitike posted on Instagram after his red card and dispatched a positive message despite his dismissal.
He said: “I was so excited tonight to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match… The emotion got the better of me tonight.
“My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for secured this victory!”

The France international is now suspended for the Reds’ next fixture against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on 27 September.
He netted his fifth goal of the season and the winner on the night, but his joy quickly turned into frustration for his teammates and manager.
Teammate Jeremie Frimpong was pictured being confused by Ekitike’s celebration after running up to the striker and reminding him he was already booked, just before the referee issued his second yellow card.

Alexander Isak to benefit from Hugo Ekitike’s antics
While Ekitike has been in fine form for Liverpool ever since he arrived at Anfield, the incident may be seen by some as a sign of inexperience
His position in the team has been threatened ever since Liverpool signed Isak for a British record transfer on deadline day, which could’ve sparked his celebration.
While the Swede has been eased into the side, making just his second start of the season, Slot may now be willing to hand him a prominent role in the team.
It may have always been the case that Isak would be the undisputed starting striker, but that may be accelerated. For Ekitike, the setback may serve as a timely lesson in what has otherwise been an impressive start.
