Kevin Thomson: This is what has been overwhelming since return to Rangers
New Rangers coach Kevin Thomson has admitted he is blown away by the backing he gets from Gers fans eight years after leaving Ibrox.
Thomson was appointed to the Gers Academy staff this week – working with the club’s Under-13’s – and fans were delighted to see the popular 33-year-old return to the club.
The former Hibs, Middlesbrough and Scotland midfielder was one of Walter Smith’s first signings after returning to the club in 2007 and quickly won over fans with his work-rate and composed performances anchoring the Gers midfield.
Since hanging up his boots, Thomson has built a strong reputation as a coach as well as impressing as a pundit and revealed he the support he gets from Gers fans is “overwhelming.”
“It’s always something, since I’ve started my own Academy, that I wanted to take steps into the senior game and there is no better place to have my first opportunity to coach some youngsters,” Thomson said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“I’ve always said when I have gone back to the club, to do bits of media and the like, that I have been treated so, so well.
“It’s humbling for me to think I left the club eight years ago, but I still get that backing from the fans. I probably never realised the fans appreciated and respected me as much as they did until I joined social media in the last year or so.
“The continued support I receive has been overwhelming, and I am just delighted that being a normal lad and being grounded, and that’s something I’d like to pass on to the young players, to be respectful and be hardworking, then you will get there.”
During his time with the Gers, Thomson made 109 appearances and lifted two Scottish League Cups and a Scottish Cup before joining Boro in 2010.
Thomson also won three caps for Scotland before his playing career was cut short by a series of serious injuries.
The 33-year-old joins a host of former Gers players now working in the club’s Academy with Peter Lovenkrands, Stephen Wright, Brian Gilmour and Gergory Vignal all working with various age groups at the club’s Auchenhowie training ground.
In other Rangers transfer news, the club are working on beating Celtic to the signing of a 22-year-old goal machine ripping up the league.
