Hutton can’t believe Goldson’s ‘strange’ Rangers confession that’s come ‘out of left field’

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers have shown more than enough progression to convince Connor Goldson to sign a new contract.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was baffled by the 28-year-old’s “strange” comments on his future at Ibrox.

Speaking to BT Sport last week, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, Goldson claimed he wants to stay at Rangers but confessed he also wants “see the club go to the next level”.

He went on to say that remaining at Rangers “needs to be right” for him and his family.

The defender’s current terms expire at the end of the season.

He could therefore sign a pre-contract deal with a foreign club next year.

Hutton admitted standards at Ibrox had slipped this season.

However, he insisted Rangers had shown the necessary growth to get Goldson tied down.

Hutton told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “It’s a bit strange that. I mean, surely the progression is coming into the Rangers team, playing well, competing in Europe, winning the league.

“That’s progression, that’s what they’ve done. The next progression is what, getting into the Champions League or winning the cups?

“That is what everybody’s looking at when it comes to progression, to win things.

“It kind of came out of left field a little bit. I think everybody, not just him, standards have maybe slipped a little bit.

“I know it’s difficult. The bar has been set that high, it can be difficult to reach it consistently.

“It’s been a little bit inconsistent. Me personally, from the outside looking in, for him to sign a new contract would help get that over that. Totally concentrate on your football and move forward.

“That is a progression so I would like to see that happen.”
