Hutton ‘best ever’ Tanganga claim after Tottenham transfer development
Alan Hutton has suggested Japhet Tanganga could become Nuno Espirito Santo’s big game right-back at Tottenham despite the signing of Emerson Royal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender claimed the 22-year-old’s defensive qualities could see him get the nod over the new arrival when facing more challenging opposition.
Tottenham confirmed the signing of Emerson, 22, from Barcelona on Tuesday (31st August).
He joins Tanganga and Matt Doherty as Nuno Espirito Santo’s right-back options in north London.
Hutton has suggested the Brazilian will give Spurs the attacking impetus fans want to see.
However, he claimed Tanganga could be used when Tottenham face better quality opponents.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “As an ex-Tottenham right-back, I looked him up to see how he plays.
“He’s very attacking, loves to get forward, make things happen, he’s got good pace. To be fair to him, all his clips were him just going forward.
“I think there are opportunities there to play different ways for Nuno. If he’s playing against a stronger team and he wants to be a little bit more defensive, I think Tanganga’s your man.
“He’s started the season on fire. He looks the hardest player to get past ever. He’s very good one-on-one but we know he’s not going to give you that out-and-out attacking play from full-back. That’s not his game.
“There will be situations where Emerson Royal will come into the team and be that attacking threat.
“That’s what Tottenham fans like to see.”

Tanganga has started all three of Spurs’ Premier League games at right-back so far this season.
Meanwhile, Doherty started the two Europa Conference League qualifiers last month.
