Alan Hutton has tipped Matty Cash to make a return to the Aston Villa starting XI against Tottenham after his “unbelievable” recovery from injury.
The former Villa right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he had been blown away by the 23-year-old’s swift comeback from a hamstring problem.
Cash missed four games for Villa but was back on the bench in last week’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.
Ahmed Elmohamady has deputised in the summer signing’s absence.
Cash has established himself as a star performer for Villa, with 21 games under his belt so far.
With the 23-year-old back available, Hutton has tipped him for an immediate return to Dean Smith’s side against Tottenham.
Asked if he expected Cash to return to the starting XI on Sunday, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Yeah, I would have thought so.
“The powers of recovery have been unbelievable for him. I mean, I’ve been there with a hamstring injury and you can be out for eight weeks. To only miss a handful of games is outstanding from him.
“He was in the squad (v Newcastle) which tells me that he’s fit. He’s trained, obviously, before that and he’s had another week of training. I would imagine he would come right back in to the team.
“He’s been key to what Villa have this season. He’s been a rock at right-back and also going forward.
“Elmo has done well since he’s come in but we know that the number one right-back is Matty Cash.”
