Hutton Exclusive: My heart bleeds for Aston Villa player who's given 'Hell of a lot'

Alan Hutton admits his heart bleeds for Aston Villa defender James Chester as he lifted the lid on the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The former Villa and Scotland star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits the 31-year-old is in “one of the worst situations” possible.

Speaking to the Athletic, Chester, whose contract at Aston Villa is set to expire this summer, admits he has not “asked too many questions” about his future at the club.

The 35-cap Wales international played just once for Villa this season before joining Stoke City on loan in January, where he has become a mainstay for the Potters.

With the centre-back admitting his future is very much up in the air, Hutton has voiced his sympathy for his former teammate’s situation.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It must be very difficult, it must be one of the worst situations to be in. Obviously a little bit older and he’s kind of running down his contract.

“We’ve never been in a situation like this before so it’s always going to be difficult.

“It is a difficult time but the last thing I can imagine Villa are looking right at this precise moment in time is to be signing new contracts for players that are already there.

“I do feel for him, he’s given a hell of a lot to the club, especially with his injuries and things like that. He’ll just have to keep working and doing what he’s doing.”

Chester told the Athletic: “My current contract at Aston Villa expires this summer and it is something I have thought of slightly but as we’re waiting on so many decisions, I haven’t really asked too many questions.

“I don’t think people at clubs will have any kind of answer for me. I’ll put my mind to it when I have all the information in front of me. Maybe in the next few weeks.”
