Hutton fears for Aston Villa stars amid Purslow probe
Alan Hutton has raised fears Aston Villa stars Emi Buendia and Emi Martinez could become embroiled in a “club v country situation” amid the “mess” of playing for Argentina this week.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa star suggested numerous clubs would be “upset” with players being forced into isolation.
Speaking to BBC Sport (7th September), Villa chief executive Christian Purslow branded the situation surrounding the Villa pair “a mess”.
Martinez and Buendia were among four players the Brazilian government has accused of breaching Covid-19 protocols.
Health authorities forced the abandonment of Brazil’s home tie against Argentina after storming the pitch.
Purslow admitted any club would be “incredibly nervous” about releasing players in the future.

However, as revealed by Football Insider (8th September), owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are “furious” Martinez and Buendia were allowed to leave ahead of Saturday’s Chelsea clash and are questioning why Purslow and the club allowed them to go.
Hutton suggested clubs would seriously consider trying to block players leaving in future.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s a mess, if we’re going to be totally honest about it.
“These nations should know the protocols, they should know what’s acceptable and what’s not.
“In future, for international games, you will be thinking: ‘Well, wait a minute. I am actually missing the player for 20 days if I let them go for 10 days.
“That’s not good for them. So it’s really going to upset a lot of the teams, a lot of the managers and their plans moving forward.
“Come the next international (break) they’re really going to have to think about this. Is it going to become a club v country situation?
“It is a really difficult situation. At the end of the day, how do you stop a player, wanting to play for his country? It’s a difficult situation to be in.
“I totally understand Christian Purslow and how he feels about the matter. You want your top stars, ready for Saturday and ready for the game.”
