Hutton feels sorry for Luke Shaw amid Man United exit claim

Alan Hutton has claimed Luke Shaw could leave Man United on a free next year after another injury setback.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said Shaw can either fight for his place at United or run down his contract.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News (11 September), the 27-year-old has been sidelined with a minor foot injury for the Red Devils’ previous two matches.

Shaw has entered the final 12 months of his agreement at Old Trafford.

The deal includes the option of a further year.

When asked if it it time for United to cut their losses, Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s a difficult one.

On his day, he’s a great player there’s no getting away from that, he’s an England international. I think he has struggled after a serious injury. Whether it be confidence or fitness or whatever. I’ve been there myself, broken leg, and I know how difficult it can be. So I feel for what he’s going through.

But, [Tyrell] Malacia has come in, he’s hit the ground running, he looks like he’s in charge of that spot and it’s really up to Luke Shaw.

He can take it two ways. He can think ‘I’m going to fight for my place it’s one of the best clubs in the world’. Or, he can just throw it in and say ‘right I’ll run down my contract and just move elsewhere’. So it’s really down to him and what he’s like as a person. Is he willing to fight or is he wanting to move on somewhere?

There’s still a great player in there, it’s just about letting it out and showing everybody. Whether he gets the opportunity now that Malacia has come in and is doing so well is a different story. For the sake of him, he needs to play football because he’s still got a long career left.
