Hutton issues ‘massive’ Celtic-Rangers claim as Kenny deal all but done – pundit

Celtic have dealt Hibernian a “bitter blow” after reportedly winning the race to sign Johnny Kenny from Sligo Rovers, according to Alan Hutton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender insisted the chance to join the Hoops is a “massive opportunity” for the 18-year-old centre-forward.

As reported by the Scottish Sun on Monday (3 January), Celtic have beaten Hibs to Kenny’s signing by triggering his £125,000 (€150,000) buyout clause.

Hibernian reportedly welcomed the teenager as a VIP guest to Easter Road last month in a bid to seal his signature.

However, Celtic are said to have won the race for the promising forward.

Hutton admitted the Edinburgh outfit were always likely to be fighting a losing battle when the Bhoys came calling.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “For an 18-year-old, for Rangers or Celtic to want you is massive. It’s a massive opportunity to come play for one of the biggest clubs.

“He’s only 18, you would think he would go into the Celtic youth setup. Then there would be a chance to move up to the first team.

“For Hibs, it’s a bitter blow. I read that they had him over as a VIP guest. You would think they would integrate him into their first team.

“It just shows you the lure of Rangers and Celtic. He is willing to go and play can B-team football, if you want, instead of SPFL’s top league.

“It’s one of those, you totally understand his decision. It’s a great opportunity for him.

“But he is going to have to give it his all to try and prove to Ange Postecoglou he’s ready to be involved in the first team.”

Kenny has scored 12 goals in 34 appearances since breaking through at Sligo Rovers.

He signed a three-year deal back in November.
