Hutton issues Rangers verdict as Connor Goldson controversy analysed

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers have been “punished” by the handball rule in their Champions League qualifiers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said there is still a “grey area” around the handball rule.

The Bears drew 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League play-off first leg on Tuesday (16 August).

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side felt they should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when Connor Goldson headed the ball against PSV defender Jordan Teze inside the 18-yard box.

The referee waved play on as Teze’s arm was not deemed to be in an unnatural position and a VAR check agreed with the on-field decision.

Rangers travel to Eindhoven for the second leg of the tie on Wednesday (24 August).

The winner will be awarded a place in the Champions League group stages.

Hutton claimed Rangers have suffered from the lack of clarity over the handball rules.

It is a grey area for me,” he told Football Insider correspondent Charlotte Cohen.

Rangers

Rangers have been punished with it, with the deflection off Connor Goldon’s arm [against Union Saint-Gilloise].

I think it is very subjective in all honesty. I really depends how you look at it. You may think that it is intentional or unintentional so it really depends on what you see the rule as being. But it is still, at this moment in time, a very grey area.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has said Rangers could open ‘chasm’ in Scottish football as £30m deal close.
