Hutton makes ‘massive’ Morelos claim after Rangers confession

Alan Hutton has suggested Alfredo Morelos may be struggling with his confidence during his lean spell in front of goal for Rangers.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 25-year-old looks to be “trying too hard” after scoring just once in his last five appearances.

As quoted by the Guardian before Thursday’s win over Brondby, Gerrard insisted Morelos’ goal record this season is “not enough”.

He also admitted it was “quite clear” the Ibrox hitman has not been “at his best”.

Morelos started and played 71 minutes against Brondby but failed to score in the 2-0 win.

The Colombian’s next goal for the Gers will be his 100th since joining the club.

Hutton insisted confidence is “massive” to strikers and suggested the Rangers ace may be struggling with his.

Asked what he thought was behind Morelos’ form, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “When you’re a striker, it can be anything.

“Confidence is obviously a massive factor. If you’re scoring goals, your confidence is through the roof and it seems like everything you touch goes in the back of the net.

“He’s had periods like that. It’s just not falling for him at the moment. It could be a case of trying too hard.

“He’s getting in the right areas, I think that’s the main thing for him for as a striker, that he’s in the right positions. He just doesn’t seem to be finishing them.

“But that comes. All it takes is one scruffy goal, then your confidence is back and you feel brilliant again. I think the thing is positionally, he’s in the right areas of the pitch.

“He just hasn’t got that finishing touch but look, it will come. It’s a matter of time, keep working hard and it will come.”

Morelos has netted five goals in 16 appearances across all competitions this season.
