Hutton reveals who to blame for Tottenham struggles after what he heard from Dier

Alan Hutton has insisted Nuno Espirito Santo must take blame after a disappointing start to the season for Tottenham despite Eric Dier’s staunch defence.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs full-back claimed the Portuguese manager had got some of his tactics horribly wrong, most notably in the North London derby defeat to Arsenal.

As quoted by the Evening Standard, Eric Dier confessed the players’ “levels” had dropped below the required standard and insisted it had “nothing to do with the manager”.

Spurs conceded nine goals over three Premier League games in defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal.

They got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Hutton admitted it was “nice to hear” Dier try and take the pressure of his manager.

However, he insisted the Portuguese boss still has to take blame for the poor performances and results.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “When you’re playing for a top club and the expectations are high, you’ve considered nine goals in three games in the Premier League, of course, there’s pressure on.

“There’s a lot of pressure on the manager. It’s nice to hear him (Dier) shouldering some of the blame because the players have to as well.

“But I think you just have to go back to the north London derby. Look at the midfield and how all over the place they were.

“They were asked to do a specific job there. They were doing what they were told, trying to run forward and leaving big gaps.

“I think both parties have to take the blame.”

Tottenham currently sit eighth in the Premier League table.

They are two points off the clubs sitting third to sixth.
