Hutton ‘surprised’ by Rangers after Nikola Katic transfer update

Alan Hutton is “surprised” Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has not given Nikola Katic a chance this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said the Ibrox boss hasn’t found his best centre-back pairing yet.

According to Football Scotland (11 August), there is no immediate move planned for the 25-year-old but the player is said to be considering what to do next.

Katic has been absent from the squad for all of Rangers’ games so far this season.

The centre-back spent last season on loan in Croatia at Hajduk Split.

He has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Katic’s future, Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s always a bit of back and forth when fees are trying to be put out there.

You kind of feel for him, he’s been through some difficult times with injuries. I thought he would get an opportunity this season, for whatever reason it’s not worked out.

Rangers

I think, when you watch the defence at this moment in time it doesn’t look like there’s a certain pairing at the back for Rangers. It’s [Connor] Goldson plus one. [James] Sands has come in, [Ben] Davies has come in and they’ve switched about so there is opportunity there.

I’m surprised that he was happy just to let him leave when I don’t really see a first pairing come to the fore and stand out at this moment.
