Connor Goldson “thoroughly deserves” to be among the top earners at Rangers as he closes in on a new contract, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Gers full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old had proved his “first-class” leadership at Ibrox this season.
As revealed by Football Insider, Goldson has reached an agreement in principle over a new contract worth around £30,000-a-week.
His new and improved wage is around the same level as that of Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos.
The deal is set to run until 2024, two years beyond when his current terms are set to expire.
The centre-back has played every single minute across all competitions this season and has worn the captain’s armband in James Tavernier’s absence.
Hutton insisted he had seen more leadership from Goldson this term than in previous seasons.
As such, he suggested the defender should be in the running for player of the season.
“He’s been absolutely brilliant,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“Just even how robust he is, to play in such a physical league and not miss anything. I think what I’ve seen this season more than I have before is, obviously without the fans, his leadership qualities.
“It’s such a big thing. Not just the standard of the football that he plays but organising people round about him. You’ve got a great keeper in goal, you’ve got him organising in front, he’s 100 per cent behind all the players.
“When you look at him with the whole Glen Kamara issue and things, he was absolutely first class. He’s up there for player the season, Rangers player the season, everything.
“Thoroughly deserved and he’ll be a key part of what Rangers do moving forward.”
