Hutton tips Aston Villa to sign Targett ally in January after confirmed transfer news

Alan Hutton has tipped Aston Villa to sign another left-back as competition for Matt Targett during the January transfer window.

The former Holte End favourite, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 26-year-old needs cover after starting all but one league game this season.

Speaking to Villa TV last Saturday (27 November), chief executive Christian Purslow revealed the change of manager could see “one or two” new arrivals, as well as possible outgoings, in the January window.

The Villa chief admitted the club would not usually do business in the winter window.

With news signings on the cards, Hutton suggested a new left-back should be a priority.

Asked where he thought the Villans need to strengthen, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “If we take it by sections, the forward line is very strong.

“I think the midfield is strong, Nakamba is coming into it at the moment as well, Douglas Luiz too.

“Back four, you could tweak it a little bit. I think at left-back they need cover or someone to really push Matt Targett.

“Especially the way Villa play, they’re going to end up wanting the full-backs high and wide. They’ll be putting crosses in, just like Rangers did.

“That’s probably an area where they’re probably going to have to look to strengthen. You’ve only got Matt Targett currently.

“Obviously Gerrard will have his own ideas and his own plans of what he sees the team looking like in the future. I think that’s an area that kind of stands out for me at the moment.”

Targett’s only missed game was the 2-0 win over Newcastle United in August.

Ashley Young took his place at left-back against the Magpies.
