Hutton tips Rangers to axe two stars v Sparta Prague and recall Bassey plus 'unreal' teammate

Alan Hutton has tipped Steven Gerrard to axe at least two players from his Rangers starting XI against Sparta Prague.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender suggested Allan McGregor and Steven Davis would both come back into the side after being benched against Dundee.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Gerrard confessed he does not want Davis, 36, to play every game this season.

John Lundstram stepped into the midfield and Gerrard insisted the summer signing’s presence would be a “positive” for Davis.

McGregor was also left unused against Dundee as Jon McLaughlin started between the sticks.

Hutton suggested the veteran duo would be back for the crunch Europa League clash in the Czech Republic.

However, he tipped Gerrard to keep fellow senior star Borna Barisic on the bench.

“I think Steven Davis is one that everybody will be thinking well come back into the fold,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He’s been unbelievable since coming back to Rangers, let’s be serious, he’s been unreal. He’s hardly missed any football.

“Sometimes, at that age, as well as he looks after himself, he needs a little rest. There’s nothing wrong with that, so I expect him to come back in.

“I think Bassey’s been excellent this season, I think he should keep his place.

“I don’t think there’ll be too many changes, one or two possibly. Gerrard will try and run with the same kind of team.

“I expect Allan McGregor to come back in, Steven Gerrard seems to have done that. McLaughlin played the game at the weekend and then the European game, McGregor comes back in.

“I’d expect him to start out but out with that not too many.”
