Hutton issues emphatic verdict on Steven Gerrard re-joining Rangers after development

Alan Hutton has claimed a return to Rangers would be “a step back” for Steven Gerrard.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a “big job” ahead of him.

On 21 October, Aston Villa confirmed that Gerrard had left his position as manager.

On Tuesday (25 October), the Villans announced that Unai Emery had been appointed as his successor.

Gerrard was in charge of Rangers until last November when he quit the Ibrox club for the Premier League side.

The 42-year-old was replaced by ex-Gers defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who has been struggling in recent weeks.

The Light Blues’ hopes of European football after Christmas have been all but snuffed out after a 3-0 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday (26 October).

The Gers are also four points behind Glasgow rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership after a 1-1 draw with Livingston on Saturday (22 October).

When asked if Gerrard could be eyeing up a return to Ibrox, Hutton told Football Insider: “I can’t see it happening.

He did such a good job, he decided to move forward with his career. It has not quite worked out at Aston Villa. He would have liked it to have gone a lot differently.

Rangers

He would maybe see it as a step back, coming back to where he has already been.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is still in a job at this moment in time. It is very difficult to sit here and say ifs and buts. He has got a big job ahead of him and that is all he will be focussing on.

In other news, an ex-teammate has told Rangers to sign Tom Heaton after Ibrox source’s reveal.
