Exclusive: Celtic senior star tipped to accept big pay cut amid transfer twist
Paul Robinson has urged Craig Gordon to sit tight and keep his options open until he knows if Celtic are re-signing Fraser Forster.
The former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested Gordon could have a huge role to play at Parkhead next season if the club can’t secure another Forster deal.
The Scottish Sun claim St Mirren have tabled a contract offer for the 37-year-old Scotland international and that talks are set to take place over a potential move this week.
Gordon is out of contract after his Hoops deal expired at the end of May but he has been offered an extension on what Football Insider has been told is reduced terms.
He dropped to third in the Celtic pecking order when Forster arrived, although Scott Bain’s finger injury gave him an extended spell on the bench and even a few starts in lesser fixtures.
When asked by Football Insider if Gordon should hold off making a decision on his future until he knows where Forster will be next season, Robinson said: “I do not think you will see Craig Gordon go anywhere until we find out what is going on with Fraser Forster.
“Southampton have unfairly price him out of a deal at the moment. We are talking about a player who has not been anywhere near the first team squad in 12-18 months. He was surplus to requirements.
“I would not be going anywhere if I was Craig Gordon, not until I find out what is going on with Fraser Forster.”
Football Insider understands that the Hoops are prioritising a move for Forster, but his wage demands could complicate a potential deal.
Gordon has made 242 appearances in six years at Celtic and won a remarkable 14 major trophies.
