‘I expect him to go’ – Gianluigi Donnarumma’s likely destination revealed after Man City swoop

Gianluigi Donnarumma could join Inter Milan despite interest from Manchester City this summer.

Donnarumma was left out of PSG’s squad for the Uefa Super Cup final victory over Tottenham and their opening Ligue 1 fixture against Nantes over the past week.

Football Insider revealed on 12 August Man City were entering the race to sign Donnarumma after he’s also been linked with rivals Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola’s side are believed to be exploring a move for the 26-year-old as speculation continues around the future of Ederson, who is out of contract in June 2026 and has been heavily linked with Galatasaray.

James Trafford started in goal for Man City in the victory over Wolves on Saturday (16 August) after rejoining the club for £27million from Burnley last month, with the deal potentially rising to £31million in add-ons.

Ederson exit will accelerate Man City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma move

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen CEO.

Donnarumma has also been linked with Chelsea and Inter Milan this summer, with his time in Paris appearing to be over.

The Italy international, who is also out of contract in June 2026, has spent the past four years with PSG after joining on a free transfer from AC Milan in 2021.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “I think a lot of it’s dependent on Ederson and I haven’t heard anything.

“I’ve been asking, but I’ve heard no rumours about Ederson actually going. I think Pep would like Donnarumma.

“He’s a quality keeper and we all know that, and that’s why there’s been so much talk and interest about him.

“I still believe he’s got an option at Inter Milan and that’s where I still think it may well end up because Ederson may not be going.

“But if Ederson goes, then yes, I expect Donnarumma to go to City. If Ederson doesn’t go, then I expect him to go back to Italy.

“I don’t expect him to end up at Man United despite all the goalkeeping dramas that we saw at the weekend.

“I still don’t think he’ll go there or to Chelsea either.

“I think it’s all going to be down to the Ederson deal and seeing what City can produce there in terms of a bit of late transfer window material.”

Man City concerned about Rodri as Real Madrid make public move

In terms of other transfer activity at the Etihad Stadium, recruitment expert Mick Brown told Football Insider Man City are concerned Rodri could have his head turned by Real Madrid after being publicly open about their interest.

However, Guardiola’s side are working behind the scenes to offer the 29-year-old a new contract in an attempt to persuade him to commit his long-term future to the club.

The Spain international’s current deal is set to expire at the Etihad in June 2027.
