'Double digits' - Hugely popular West Ham player shares bold prediction

By Abigail Withey

West Ham winger Michail Antonio has made a bold prediction about his performance in the 2017/18 season as he returns from injury.

The 27-year-old has been out of action since April after he injured his hamstring against Swansea City during their 1-0 victory.

After over four months of recovery the winger is finally set to make an appearance for the Hammers and has already set himself a target for the current season.

The Englishman, who is immensely popular with supporters, is expected to appear back in West Ham’s match day squad to face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday and will be hoping for a goal as he had stated that he has always had the drive to score.

He said: “I’ve always scored goals and had goals in me myself, wherever I have played, so it was about whether I could make the step up to the Prem and keep on doing it, and I have by scoring nine goals in each of my two seasons here.”

“Hopefully I can get better this year because I am going for double digits, that’s my plan,” he told the club’s official website.

Antonio stepped up his recovery last week when he featured in the club’s development squad which played Everton’s Under 23s in a 0-0 draw, and now looks ready to return to the top-flight.

When speaking to the club, the winger confirmed that he was back and ready to go.

“Nobody likes to be injured, particularly for four months,” he said. “But now I’m back and raring to go.”

West Ham will be hoping for a better result at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday as the Hammers opened their Premier League campaign with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester United.

In other West Ham news, the club have been handed a huge injury boost as one winger returns and a fan favourite is soon to follow.
