‘I know Darren Fletcher well, this is why he’s the perfect Man United manager appointment’

Ruben Amorim has been dismissed from his role as Man United manager, and Darren Fletcher has been backed to be successful as the interim boss.

That is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade and remains very well-connected there, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 41-year-old will galvanise the squad.

Amorim was sacked by Man United following his press conference outburst in which he appeared to criticise the board following the 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had previously outlined his commitment to Amorim, but following a number of inconsistent results, his comments proved to be the final straw.

Fletcher, who made over 340 appearances for the Red Devils and lifted five Premier League titles and the Champions League, will now take short-term charge.

Darren Fletcher replaces Ruben Amorim at Man United

Brown told Football Insider on 9 December that doubts about Amorim’s future have lingered despite their turnaround in form so far this season.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working alongside elite-level managers including both Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, insisted that while the decision came as a “surprise”, all parties must now move forward.

He’s a great lad, Fletch,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s been in United’s coaching team for a while, with the academy and with the first-team, so he’s got the necessary body of work behind him.

“I don’t imagine there will be too much change, but he already knows the players and the club.

“At times like this you just need somebody to fire up the squad and he could definitely do that.

“We haven’t seen his qualities as a manager at this level, but I know him as a person and as a football man and he’s a great lad and a great character.

“Obviously speculation will start now, but in the mean time he just has to do what he can and help the club keep moving forward.”

Amorim follows Enzo Maresca blueprint after public outburst

Amorim’s sacking seemingly came as a direct consequence of his decision to hit out at the owners, with questions asked about their backing behind the scenes.

This came just days after Enzo Maresca’s sensational exit from Chelsea, which was caused by a similar outburst about the Blues’ ownership and backing.

Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior looks set to take over at Stamford Bridge within days, with Chelsea moving quickly to line up their next permanent boss.

While Fletcher has been backed to be successful in his short-term period, work is now underway at Old Trafford to find a new permanent boss.

Oliver Glasner is the favourite for Man United, while the likes of Laurent Blanc and Xavi have also been linked with the position in the short period since it became available.
