Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford for his reaction to the summer signing of Rodrigo Moreno.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Sunderland striker delivered his verdict after Bamford revealed he feared for his place in the Leeds side after Rodrigo’s arrival.
The 27-year-old told Leeds’ official podcast he thought he was going to spend the season on the bench after Rodrigo’s £29million arrival from Valencia in August.
He added: “I think the fact that we were signing him motivated me.”
Bamford has retained his place up front despite Rodrigo’s arrival and has found the net an impressive 10 times in 17 Premier League games.
The Spain international has instead been deployed in the number 10 role and has played alongside Bamford.
Asked by Football Insider what he made of Bamford’s admission, Phillips said: “It tells you a lot about his character.
“At any club, you want competition and when a player is signed a player can react in one of two ways. They either sulk, throw their toys out of the pram, moan to their agent and ask to leave or you roll your sleeves up, accept the challenge and meet it head-on.
“It is up to you to show the manager that you deserve to play week in, week out and Patrick Bamford has done that.
“His performances have been exceptional this year. I love hearing that from Bamford. I love it when a player says things like that.”
Bamford and Rodrigo have been involved with 16 of Leeds’ 30 Premier League goals this term.
Bamford has scored 10 and provided three assists while Rodrigo has found the net on three occasions.
