‘I love him’ – Liverpool fans wowed by ‘class act’ after what he did for his country last night

Liverpool fans were touched by Andy Robertson’s tearjerking thoughts post-World Cup qualification with Scotland on former teammate Diogo Jota.

Liverpool star Jota tragically passed away on 3 July 2025, affecting his family and friends and the Anfield family.

The Portuguese’s absence has been felt by the Reds who have done their best to continue without him, yet the process has been hard with many players making their emotions known to the fans.

On what was a astonishing night for Scotland as they made it to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, soon to be out-of-contract Liverpool star Robertson paid tribute to his former teammate and beloved friend after the game.

In what was a frenetic tie between the Tartan Army and Denmark for automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup, Steve Clarke’s remained strong to claim an incredible 4-2 victory.

The win sealed Scotland’s place at the global tournament in North America next summer as they are set to appear for the first time in 28 years.

Whilst the left-back was jubilant like the rest of his teammates were after the full-time whistle, in a post-match interview with BBC Sport (18 November), he spoke about the difficulties he faced prior to the game on an emotional occasion.

Elaborating on conversations he had with Jota about the pair going to their first World Cup together, he said: “I’ve hid it well, but today I’ve been in bits.

“I know the age I’m at, this could be my last chance to go to the World Cup.

“I couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head today. We spoke so much about going to the World Cup. I know he’ll be smiling over me today. I’m so glad it’s ended up this way.”

Liverpool fans were quick to come together in support of the number 26 in an emotionally overwhelming night when speaking about a club icon who will never be forgotten, with one supporter saying: “Love Andy Robertson, he is a legend at Liverpool.” with another adding: “Andy Robertson is one of the classiest men in football and we’re so lucky he plays for Liverpool.”
