‘I must admit’ – Hutton reacts to Celtic source’s goalkeeper transfer update

Benjamin Siegrist needs to leave Celtic this month so he can earn regular first-team football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claimed a move could be a “fantastic” chance for the 31-year-old to revive his career away from Parkhead.

As revealed by Football Insider (22 January), the Hoops are ready to accept an offer for the goalkeeper before the close of the transfer window with multiple European clubs weighing up moves.

Siegrist has made just two competitive appearances for Celtic since joining the club in the summer of 2022 from Dundee United and has made the matchday squad just once this season.

Hutton suggested that the shot-stopper’s time in Glasgow is up as there was little chance he would ever emerge as Brendan Rodgers’ first pick.

“I must admit, I thought it was a really good move when Celtic signed him,” he told Football Insider.

“He’d done really well with Dundee and I knew him during my time at Aston Villa.

“He’s improved so much since then with age and playing football.

“They have Joe Hart and Scott Bain and they’re looking to bring someone in.

“He’s just not really played at all. I’ve seen him play two competitive games.

“He’s 31 now, so he needs to go off and play football.

“It’s not ideal for him to just sit there.

“I can’t see him coming through at Celtic and being a regular number one, so this could be a fantastic opportunity for him to go and get some first-team football.”
