‘I only ever hear…’ – Liverpool dressing room savaged by club legend

Jamie Carragher is not happy with the role Mohamed Salah is playing in Liverpool’s current run of dire form.

Liverpool have failed to successfully defend their league title so far this season as they already look to have slipped out of the race for top spot come next May.

Arne Slot‘s side started the campaign strongly with five straight wins, but they have lost six of their last seven league outings to currently sit in 11th place in the top-flight.

Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Saturday (22 November) to inflict a second successive loss by that scoreline on Slot’s side and pile the pressure on the Dutchman’s position at the club.

Club legend Jamie Carragher has been vocal about Liverpool’s issues in the early parts of the campaign, and he has now picked out a certain problem he has with fellow Reds icon Mohamed Salah.

Carragher calls out Salah for lack of accountability after Liverpool losses

Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool turned into a well publicised saga this time last year as he admitted he was disappointed not to have received an offer of fresh terms.

Liverpool did extend Salah’s contract until 2027 in April as he won the PFA Player of the Year award for 2024-25, but his form has dropped off this season with just five goals in 17 appearances up to now.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (24 November), Carragher called the Egyptian forward out for how he perceived him to be vocal about his contract situation last season, but has, in his eyes, not faced the music so far in this campaign about the Reds’ poor form.

He said: “I must say on the back of all these Liverpool defeats, it’s always Virgil van Dijk who comes out, and as I said the captain should do that…but there should be other players in that dressing room coming out and speaking for the club.

“A year ago this weekend, Mo Salah wasn’t shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation about the club not offering him a contract.

“I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets man of the match, or he needs a new contract. I’d like to see Mo Salah come out, as one of the leaders, one of the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn’t always be the captain.

Salah could leave Liverpool before 2027

Salah is now 33-years-old, and not many were expecting him to be as good as he was last season as he fired Liverpool to the title once more.

His levels have clearly dropped off at the start of this campaign from what they were even before last term, however, with this arguably his worst patch of form for the Reds since his arrival over eight years ago.

Even though his contract on Merseyside runs until 2027 and Slot has backed him to improve once more, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness recently revealed to Football Insider that Salah is likely to leave Liverpool sooner than many expect him to.

That is due to the offers he has on the table, with mega-rich Saudi Pro League clubs still after Salah following his decision to turn down a move to the Middle East in favour of signing a new deal at Liverpool.
