'I remember bumping into his Dad...' - Exclusive: Agbonlahor in awe of 'Villa star of the future'

Gabriel Agbonlahor has heaped praise onto Aston Villa teenager Louie Barry after his goalscoring debut against Liverpool on Friday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer insisted the 17-year-old will be “a star of the future” for the Midlands giants.

Barry made his senior debut on Friday night as a team of Villa’s Under-23s and Under-18s were selected to face the Premier League champions after a coronavirus outbreak forced the entire first-team squad into isolation.

The Villa youngsters put in a valiant display against Jurgen Klopp’s side despite going 1-0 down in the opening minutes.

Former Barcelona academy star Barry equalised for the hosts just before half-time but Liverpool eventually ran out 4-1 winners after scoring three goals within five minutes after the hour mark.

Asked by Football Insider which of Villa’s young stars stood out, Agbonlahor said: “Louie Barry for his goal.

“It’s a Premier League defender he’s outpaced and he’s got composure to side-foot it there. I’ve been in that position, it’s not an easy technique to have that composure and put it in the bottom corner.

“It’s very good to see Aston Villa, as they’ve always done, produce quality young players.

“I remember bumping into his Dad a couple of years ago when I was in Barcelona with my son and we were getting on the airplane and had a chat with him.

“Just to have that experience of playing at the academy in Barcelona will have helped him and he would’ve learned a lot technically and it showed as well in his performance.

“Now he’s back at the club he loves and I’m sure he’ll go and become a Villa star of the future.”
