Jack Grealish is likely to join Tottenham this summer regardless of Aston Villa getting promoted, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds United and Coventry striker, who is a Championship expert, is convinced the playmaker is heading back to the Premier League even if Villa miss out on a top-flight place.
Spurs tried to sign Grealish last summer, when Villa knocked back their bids, but Whelan is convinced the Champions League semi-finalists are preparing another big push to land one of the outstanding players outside of the English top flight.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan said: “You can see it happening. It’s been on the cards for a while and Spurs nearly got him last summer. I think he’ll join Spurs soon enough, and probably this summer.”
Grealish has been instrumental in Villa’s remarkable run of 10 consecutive league wins that has catapulted them back into promotion contention and cemented their place in the end-of-season play-offs.
The attacking midfielder has scored four goals during that run and played some of the best football of his career.
“Jack Grealish has all the talent in the world,” Whelan added to Football Insider. “In the past two months he has proved he can be that all-round midfield player. He’s added more goals and assists, and that extra quality in final third.
“Yes, it’s in the Championship and a different level to the Premier League, but Spurs wouldn’t be chasing him if he wasn’t a top player and they could get him even if Villa go up.”
Grealish signed a new Villa contract last September that runs until the summer of 2023 but multiple reports have stated it includes a release clause.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are to re-open contract talks with ace who seemed set for cut-price Spurs exit.
