Gary Neville has raved about Mauricio Pochettino and admitted he had got his pre-season Tottenham prediction wrong.
Former Manchester United defender Neville selected the highly-rated Argentine as his manager of the season ahead of Premier League title-winning boss, Antonio Conte.
Neville admitted that he thought Spurs would go “backwards” at the start of the season because of their involvement in the Champions League.
Added to that, he felt their “lack of investment” to their squad compared to their rivals would also hurt them.
That is why Neville, speaking on Monday Night Football, which aired on Sky Sports 1, was full of praise for Pochettino.
“At the start of the season, I thought Tottenham would dip,” Neville told Sky Sports. “I thought they would go backwards, just purely because of playing in the Champions League and the lack of investment compared to others.
“For Mauricio Pochettino to achieve what he has done this year and to get Tottenham into second, to beat their overall record points in the Premier League, for me it is an outstanding managerial achievement. I have ultimately gone for him.”
For the second consecutive season, Tottenham have secured Champions League football under the guidance of Pochettino.
The north London club secured the runners-up spot at the weekend when they beat Manchester United 2-1 in their final match at White Hart Lane.
Over the course of the season, Spurs have played 36 Premier League matches, recording 80 points and picking up 24 wins.
They competed in the Champions League this season, but they were knocked out of the group stages and ultimately suffered the same fate when dropping down to the Europa League.
Pochettino’s side have already posted their records points tally in Premier League history as they could add to that number during their last two league games of the season.
In other Tottenham news, Stan Collymore has stated that this Spurs duo are his favourite players in the top-flight.
