Ian Poveda set for extended spell out of Leeds team after new development – expert

Ian Poveda should leave Leeds United as his selection for Colombia shows he is not a part of Daniel Farke’s plans and won’t get back in the team soon.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie was keen to see Poveda, 23, get more game time this season even if it’s away from Elland Road.

He was selected for an experimental Colombia squad for friendlies across the United States against Venezuela and Mexico this month and will be unavailable to the Whites for their clashes against Sunderland and Coventry City.

He has been given little game time by the German this season, making just one start in their 1-0 defeat to Birmingham earlier this season and amassing just 41 Championship minutes since.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, McAvennie feels it’s unlikely his Leeds journey will continue after the summer.

“Leeds have to let him go and play football,” he told Football Insider.

“Go and play for your country, why not? He’d just be sitting here, why would they not let him go?

“It means that he’s not part of Farke’s plans, that’s what it’s saying.

“And he’ll be getting some games, big games and getting a chance to play 90 minutes so it’s a win-win for the manager.

“If he comes back and shines, he might get a new contract but if you’re coming to the end of your contract and they’re letting you go away, it’s not a good sign and I think, that’s it now, the end of his Leeds career, he should go.”
