Ian Wright: I would love to have seen this ex-Arsenal defender deal with Diego Costa

By Amir Mir

Ian Wright believes former Arsenal defender Martin Keown would have had “unbelievable” run-ins with Diego Costa if they had opposed one another.

Three-time Premier League winner Keown was known for his aggression during his playing days, with Chelsea’s Costa showing similar traits in today’s game.

Arsenal and Chelsea meet on Saturday evening at the Emirates, with Spanish forward Costa expected to line-up against the hosts.

But, former Arsenal forward Wright has said hard-hitting centre-back Keown would have “loved and relished” the challenge of Costa.

“I’d like to see Martin Keown up against Diego Costa,” Wright told ArsenalFanTV. “Keown would have loved and relished that challenge of Costa because whatever we say about Costa, he plays on the edge, but his hold up play and the runs he makes, honestly he is good.

“But, Martin could deal with all that and the foolishness as well. I would have loved to have seen Martin Keown up against Diego Costa, it would have been unbelievable.”

Brazilian-born Costa has started the season is superb fashion scoring five goals in his opening five appearance for Antonio Conte’s side.

The controversial striker takes on Wenger’s Arsenal at the weekend where he is expected to line up against Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

Conte’s men are level on points with their London rivals with ten points from five games, but Wenger’s side edge them out on goal difference.
