Ianis Hagi expected to complete Rangers exit – sources

Rangers are yet to indicate that they will offer Ianis Hagi a new contract as his current deal edges closer to expiry, sources have told Football Insider.

Hagi was the hero for Barry Ferguson’s makeshift side at Pittodrie on Sunday, with his stoppage-time goal sealing a 2-2 draw against Aberdeen, which mathematically keeps Rangers in the Premiership title race.

The 26-year-old’s first-time strike came barely 24 hours after he’d called reports that he wants to leave Rangers “fake news”, but Hagi may not have a significant say in the matter as 30 June approaches.

That date will see each of Hagi, Tom Lawrence and Leon Balogun’s contracts at Ibrox expire, and sources have told Football Insider that the Romanian is yet to agree to new terms and an exit is expected.

Rangers yet to rule out Ianis Hagi contract extension

While Hagi is in line to leave Ibrox permanently this summer as the 2024–25 season approaches its final straight, Football Insider revealed in February that Rangers planned on opening talks for a new contract.

Former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Ibrox board was “determined” to come to an agreement with Hagi, but they’re yet to strike a deal with time running out.

With Football Insider revealing later in February that a plethora of clubs across Europe have offered Hagi an exit route out of Ibrox this summer, he could be set to join Genoa or Fenerbahce, among others.

Rangers readying potential Ianis Hagi replacements

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that 49ers Enterprises plan on making six headline signings at Rangers this summer.

Of those six signings, and with both Hagi and Lawrence seemingly bound for the exit door in Govan, it’s not hard to picture a top-class attacking midfielder being near the top of the 49ers’ transfer shortlist.

Building the nucleus of a successful team again – alongside a manager whom 49ers Enterprises will appoint at the end of the season – is paramount for Rangers this summer, and it remains to be seen if Hagi will still be around to be part of it.
