Ibrahima Konate could ‘force’ Liverpool teammate into exit amid Jamie Carragher claim – pundit

Kevin Phillips has tipped Joe Gomez to push for an exit from Liverpool this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker suggested Ibrahima Konate’s success will force the 24-year-old out of Anfield.

Gomez watched on from the bench on Wednesday night as Konate starred alongside Virgil van Dijk in a 2-0 win over Inter Milan.

CBS Sports pundits Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, as quoted by Metro (17 February), lauded Konate and claimed he was deserving of the man of the match award at the San Siro.

Phillips is amazed by how the centre-half situation has changed on Merseyside this season.

“Gomez leaving looks to be a distinct possibility now,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“It’s amazing how things have played out. You could not see the partnership of Gomez and Van Dijk being broken a couple of years ago. It just shows you though if you are not there, performing week in, week out you will be replaced.

“Konate is an exceptional young centre-back. He took his chance the other night. He will form a formidable partnership alongside Van Dijk for years to come.

“Gomez will want to play football because as we know, he has a lot of quality. In search of that I think he’ll be forced to move elsewhere in the summer. It will be interesting to see what happens.”
