Ibrahima Konate: ‘Devastating’ Liverpool injury news confirmed

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate admitted he is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a “frustrating” injury in their 2-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid on Wednesday (November 27).

The 25-year-old sustained a knee injury in the final moments of what he hailed as their “amazing” victory over the reigning European champions following a challenge from young forward Endrick.

Konate had to be helped off the pitch after the final whistle and was assessed at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre upon his return.

His absence, for a period expected to be weeks rather than months, is a crushing blow for Liverpool given his outstanding form this season.

Alongside Virgil van Dijk, Konate has been instrumental in securing Liverpool the best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding only eight goals in their 12 matches.

The Frenchman has started 16 matches among 18 appearances in all competitions this season, yielding 1424 minutes of action.

He’s even popped up with the odd goal contribution, scoring twice and providing one assist to help Liverpool to the top of both the Premier League and the new Champions League format.

Liverpool have nine games throughout December, including their game against Man City on Sunday (December 1), losing Konate could prove to be a devastating blow to their title hopes.

Slot’s side aren’t blessed with a wealth of options at centre-back, with Konate sidelined due to injury, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez are the only viable first-team options available.

It remains unclear how long Konate will be out for, but his recent Instagram post suggests it could be for quite some time.

Konate said: “So frustrating to pick up this injury right at the end of a great game on Wednesday night. Now we start the recovery process but one thing I promise is I will come back and be the best I can be once again.

“Thank you for the amazing support at Anfield. Inshallah we will keep going and I will support the team every step of the way.”
