‘Ibrahima Konate to leave because of FSG’ – Liverpool fans explode at news

Liverpool fans have taken to social media to express their frustration with owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) after receiving an update on Ibrahima Konate.

The Frenchman was at the centre of the stoppage-time controversy in the Merseyside derby, with some believing Konate was fouled in the build-up to James Tarkowski’s Everton equaliser.

The 25-year-old has been a key player for Arne Slot this season, but he has just one year remaining on his contract as it expires in 2026.

Instead of receiving an update on a potential renewal, Liverpool fans were met with reports of a possible transfer away from the club.

According to ESPN’s Julien Laurens, Paris Saint-Germain are “keen to sign” the defender, and Konate is “tempted” by a return to France.

Liverpool opened contract talks with Konate earlier this season, but negotiations have since stalled as focus on other players have taken importance.

The French defender has been vital for the Reds, making 26 appearances, starting 17 of his 18 Premier League games, and contributing two goals and two assists.

Injuries have been a persistent issue for Konate since his arrival, missing 37 games across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

This season, those concerns have continued, with the centre-back missing eight matches towards the end of last year. However, when fit, he regularly earns his place back in the starting XI, forming a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool fans vent frustration at FSG over contract situation

Liverpool fans have previously expressed their anger at FSG, criticising the club’s failure to resolve contract situations for Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The uncertainty has sparked transfer speculation surrounding all three, with Alexander-Arnold heavily linked to Real Madrid.

They all have just few months left of their contract and are coming dangerously close to becoming free agents.

With Konate’s contract set to expire in just over a year and fresh reports of a potential transfer away, fans have directed their frustration at the owners.

One supporter called it “a disgrace the way these contracts are being handled” while another labelled FSG as “one of the worst owners” in reaction to the news.
