Jibes aimed at Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos that he is “fat” and “overweight” are absolute nonsense.

That is the verdict of ex-Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about criticism of the physique of the Ibrox goal machine.

Morelos put his Scottish League Cup final misery behind him last night to take Rangers into the Europa League knockout stages with the goal that secured a 1-1 draw against Young Boys and the point needed to reach the last 32 of the competition.

The forward is nicknamed ‘El Buffalo’ but Whelan is in no doubt he is a lean machine who will continue to terrify defences.

“Some players’ physiques can be deceptive and Morelos is probably in that camp,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Robbie Keane was like that as well. I played with him and some said he was carrying a bit.

“But he knew where the goal was, could turn any defence inside out and had the mobility to gain half a yard of space.

“I’ve heard people call Morelos fat and overweight. It’s nonsense. It’s the talent that count and he has bucket loads of talent. He’s quick enough as well.

“I’m pretty sure Alfredo Morelos has the respect of every centre-back he’s played against in Europe. In fact, they’re probably terrified of him.”

Morelos has banged in 26 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions this season, including 14 in 14 Europa League clashes.

Six of those have come in the group stages of the competition, more than any other player in 2019-20.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Neil Lennon is “scared to death” of two Ibrox players ahead of rematch this month.
