The former Leeds star lined up alongside fellow summer arrival Cedric Itten as star striker Alfredo Morelos was left out completely by the manager.
Hutton believes that the new boys will be Gerrard’s starting pair up front and insists that it was massively significant that Roofe got off the mark.
Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s massively important, obviously these guys come in as a striker and they’re there to score goals, that’s the job.
“The quicker they can get off the mark the better, he’d be coming in wanting to prove a point, he’s obviously had his injury problems last season so he’d be wanting to get off to a good start.
“He knows he’s coming into a big team so to score so early on in his career, his confidence will go through the roof. Obviously, with everything that’s gone on with Morelos, it looks like Roofe and Itten are going to be the main men now.
“To come in and score your goal is only going to bring confidence and add to the team moving forward.”
Ryan Kent scored the Gers’ other goal to keep Gerrard and his men top of the Premiership table.
The Light Blues’ next game sees them travel to Hamilton on Saturday evening.
