Jackie McNamara suggests that it is Steven Gerrard pushing to get Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor a new deal at Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell edge, the former Scotland international says that the veteran shot-stopper is an important member of the squad and that he is someone the Gers boss will want to build his side around over the coming years.
McNamara says that McGregor has established himself as a crucial member of the side since his return to Glasgow and that it will be Gerrard pushing to get that deal over the line.
McNamara told Football Insider: “Obviously he’s very experienced now, he’s kept out (Wes) Foderingham who was a mainstay before he came in.
“(Think it’s Gerrard driving the deal?) Yeah, I think he’ll want to keep the right guys there in the dressing room that he wants to build his team around.
“This season especially there’s been a few moments where he’s kept his team in the game.”
McGregor has been a mainstay since joining Gerrard at Rangers, playing a total of 52 times across all competitions for the Light Blues last season.
This campaign has seen him miss just three games with 18 appearances under his belt already.
