Alan Hutton has tipped Rangers to trigger an extension clause in the contract of super-quick defender Leon Balogun.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers and Scotland right-back claimed the 32-year-old has “done more than enough” this season to warrant an extension to his deal.
Balogun moved to Ibrox from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer in the summer and signed a one-year deal.
Steven Gerrard told the Scottish Sun that he wants to tie down the Nigeria international to a new contract.
He said: “Leon is someone we want to keep hold of. He knows that and he is performing so well. He signed a contract with an option of an extension and we want him to be here beyond this season.”
Asked by Football Insider whether the former Brighton centre-back should be offered a new deal, Hutton said: “If you look at him over the season he’s done more than enough for that extra year.
“Look, 32 is not that old. I know nowadays we look at players and think ‘oh, he’s over 30 he must be over the hill.’ It’s not the case. We see he’s good on the ball, technically he’s good, he’s got good pace and there are no signs of him slowing him down.
“Why wouldn’t you want to keep someone of that experience as well?
“You never know what’s going to happen with Goldson so you want to keep those bigger players with the experience that you need.”
Balogun has played 18 times for Rangers across all competitions this term including last Saturday’s Glasgow derby with Celtic.
In the 12 Scottish Premiership games he has played this season, the Light Blues have conceded just one goal.
