Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to scupper Celtic’s bid to sign Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker admits he would love to see the 32-year-old at Elland Road if the Whites were to recruit a new shot-stopper.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic are working on a multi-million-pound loan deal for Forster, with his huge wages at Southampton leaving a permanent deal dead in the water.

As revealed by this site in April, Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is considering a move away from Elland Road this summer after his FA racism charge, with a number of clubs back in Spain keen on offering him the chance to return to his homeland.

Whelan believes that manager Marcelo Bielsa will be in the market for a new shot-stopper and has urged the Argentine to chase a deal for the Southampton outcast.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I’d love to see him at Leeds United, we need a goalkeeper, we need a goalkeeper with experience.

“You don’t look to too many goalkeepers away from Fraser Forster. You know, if he’s available and we get to the Premier League, I would be very, very interested in that player coming to sign for us.”

Loanee Illan Meslier has filled in for Casilla during the Spaniard’s enforced absence, with the Whites holding an option to buy the Frenchman permanently.

Forster played 39 times for Celtic during the 2019/20 campaign and helped the Hoops secure the Premiership title and Scottish League Cup.
