Tottenham chiefs have been told to abandon their big-money pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and instead show their faith in Eric Dier.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, ex-Premier League striker Noel Whelan claimed the England international can do a better job in central midfield than the 24-year-old Saints star.

This site revealed earlier this month that Hojbjerg is Spurs’ top central midfield target going into the summer window, while Everton are also keen.

Whelan is less convinced of the need for the former Bayern Munich man, despite his proven Premier League qualities and fine campaign.

“If I was Jose Mourinho, I would rather have Eric Dier in that position,” he told Football Insider. “They have Ndombele there as well so they do not really need another defensive midfield player.

“He’s a different kind of player to Hojbjerg, but Dier is not too dissimilar. Their main role is to recover the ball, get it quickly to someone else, and keep the team organised and tight.”

Tottenham are expected to concentrate on relatively inexpensive signings this summer but that does not rule out a deal for Hojbjerg, who appointed super-agent Pini Zahavi as his new representative earlier this year.

The Denmark international’s current deal expires in the summer of 2021 and he has publicly made clear his desire to move to a club better equipped to challenge for trophies.

The defensive midfielder has started 27 of Southampton’s 29 Premier League matches this season among 33 appearances in all competitions.

He has accumulated 129 matches for the Saints since signing in 2016 after playing a part in three Bundesliga-winning seasons at former club Bayern Munich.

In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that a senior star is in line to sign contract extension after big development.
