‘Idiots’ – Keith Wyness drops verdict on Man United appointing Michael Carrick permanently
Michael Carrick should keep the Man United job on a permanent basis if qualification to the Champions League is secured this season.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who thinks Carrick has “every chance” of landing the Man United job.
Carrick’s first game in caretaker charge started with Man United beating Man City 2-0 at Old Trafford to lift them into the top five of the Premier League table.
Champions League football could be crucial to Carrick’s long-term future at Man United, with the club not partaking in European competition this season.
Man United could face ‘very hard’ Michael Carrick decision
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – is backing Carrick to get Man United “back on track.”
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the club would be making a “very foolish” decision if they were to qualify for the Champions League and sack Carrick.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Now, will Carrick stay on? I think he’s got every chance.
“Now, I said last week how important it is for United to get Champions League and if Carrick gets them into Champions League, it’d be very hard and very foolish to then change the whole situation and bring somebody else in.
“So I think he’s got every chance and I think he will do well. So I think they’ll sell United down, they’ll get some reality back into the squad, he’ll get the belief from the players. He’ll get the buy-in from all the legends who’ve been chipping away in the background and I think the whole thing is going to get back on track.
“So it was not brain surgery, it was sitting there right in front of you. But I’m afraid this is another example of, you know, idiots coming in and thinking they know better about football when actually the solution was staring them right in the face.”

Man United lining up £20m move
Carrick will be backed by the Man United board in the January transfer window, with the club working on a new signing.
Ruben Neves could join Man United in a £20million deal from Saudi club Al Hilal, with the 28-year-old having previously played for Wolves in the Premier League.
The Red Devils are keen to add a new midfielder to the squad, and Carrick has already made the decision to bring Kobbie Mainoo back into the first team picture.
