Igor Thiago transfer: Three-club race kicks off for ‘huge’ Brentford deal

Igor Thiago is attracting interest from a number of top Premier League clubs as he continues to be linked with a move away from Brentford in January.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the league’s “biggest clubs” have all taken note of the 24-year-old’s displays.

While a mid-season departure from the Gtech Community Stadium is considered highly unlikely, clubs are keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a potential summer move.

Thiago shone once again as Brentford beat Sunderland 3-0 last time out, with the Brazilian scoring twice to take his tally to 16 for the season.

He is only behind Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot, while his goals have shot Keith Andrews’ side up to fifth in the table.

Premier League giants set sights on Igor Thiago deal

Brown told Football Insider last month that Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Thiago, while he has also been linked with a move to Tottenham.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the striker’s goalscoring exploits are both a positive and a negative for Brentford.

There’s definitely a lot of interest in Igor Thiago,” he told Football Insider.

“Goalscorers are always going to attract interest, especially when he’s proving he can do it in the Premier League, and he is certainly one of those.

“All of the biggest clubs in the league will be looking at him, because everybody could do with signing a new striker no matter who they are.

“He’s done a brilliant job for Brentford so far this season, and of course it won’t have gone unnoticed.

“They’ll be keeping an eye on him and testing the water to see whether a deal would be possible, but I think it’s highly unlikely it’ll happen in January, it would have to be a huge offer.

“Brentford won’t want to lose him mid-way through the season, I’d be surprised if they even entertained that, and it makes sense for him to stick with them for now.”

Tottenham and Newcastle join three-club race for Thiago

Football Insider revealed last month that Newcastle, Tottenham and Villa all want Thiago and have considering making a move in the January window.

While it is considered unlikely that he will move on mid-way through the season, should an offer be made which is “too good to turn down”, he could move on.

This comes as Football Insider revealed Brentford are determined to keep Thiago and will do everything in their power to deter interest from their rivals.

Amid the ongoing speculation over his future, the striker remains determined to keep up his impressive displays with Brentford for the rest of the season.

Thiago has been tipped for a Brazil call-up ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and he knows playing and scoring regularly will give him the best shot at his dream.
