Ilkay Gundogan to Man City is ‘done’ after agreement today – expert

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man City will profit from Ilkay Gundogan’s international retirement as he closes on a return.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the 33-year-old will be a “great signing” for the Premier League champions despite his advancing years.

Gundogan is closing in on a return to Man City with Barcelona ready to let the five-time Premier League winner leave for free. It is believed the midfielder, 33, has agreed terms after one of his representatives held talks in England on Wednesday.

The 82-cap Germany star called time on his international career via X on Monday (19 August) after failing to win the European Championships on home soil.

Gundogan regularly wore the armband for City in the 2022-23 campaign, notching 11 goals and seven assists across 51 games as they won a historic treble.

Man City to benefit from Gundogan’s international retirement, says Wyness

Wyness insisted he will fit straight back into Pep Guardiola’s squad as they chase a fifth straight Premier League title.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Gundogan is the one who will get done by the end of the window.

“I’ve seen that he’s also retired from international football with Germany.

“That’s a big sign that he wants to come back, play for Pep again and bring his best levels.

“He’d be a great signing. He’s the steel that we all saw in City’s team from a couple of years ago, Pep loves him.

“He’d fit right back into the City squad.”
