‘I’ll be amazed if Oliver Glasner isn’t sacked after what I’ve seen at Crystal Palace’

Danny Murphy has claimed that he would be amazed if Oliver Glasner lasts the rest of the season with Crystal Palace.

Palace were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea on Sunday, marking an 11th consecutive game across all competitions without victory.

Glasner came close to being sacked earlier this month, after a stunning press conference that targeted mainly those above him.

The Austrian has already confirmed that he will be leaving at the end of his contract in June, but he risked immediate action with his comments.

However, Palace are committed to finding a successor in the summer, and will attempt to stick by their manager until the end of the season.

Sunday’s match very much summed up Palace‘s season so far. The Eagles started well, but ultimately collapsed once behind.

Jean-Philippe Mateta should have given Glasner‘s side the lead in the opening minutes when he shot straight at Robert Sanchez, and he and Palace were punished before the break.

Young Jaydee Canvot endured a nightmare performance against Chelsea, and it started when his wayward back pass was seized on by Estevao and finished past Dean Henderson.

Joao Pedro netted after the break to double the visitors’ advantage before Canvot was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, with Enzo Fernandez scoring from the spot.

Adam Wharton‘s needless sliding challenge prompted a red card in the 72nd minute, encapsulating the Palace frustrations.

They did find a late consolation when Chris Richards nodded home in the final minutes, but that was not enough to hide the dark clouds at Selhurst Park.

“I think his body language isn’t good and the way he’s talking doesn’t fill me with any positivity,” said Murphy on BBC Match of the Day when asked about Glasner.

“I think the players feed off that, start feeling sorry for themselves, being a little bit despondent. I’d be amazed if he lasts the season.”

Who could replace Glasner at Palace?

Should Glasner be sacked, former England manager Gareth Southgate has been named as the favourite to replace him.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank could also be in the conversation if he is dismissed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while Getafe boss Jose Bordalas has been mentioned.

The question for Steve Parish and the decision-makers at Selhurst Park is how long they are willing to wait for Glasner to find some stability.

The Eagles now sit 15th in the Premier League, and could be dragged into a relegation battle if they are not careful.
