Illan Meslier axed? Daniel Farke’s updated Leeds plan revealed

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will back Illan Meslier moving forward despite his costly error against Sunderland before the international break.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson admitted he thinks the 24-year-old is a “top-quality goalkeeper,” regardless of his error.

Meslier failed to make a routine catch at the end of Leeds’ game against Sunderland on 4 October which ultimately cost them two points as they drew 2-2.

Football Insider revealed that the Yorkshire giants have no plans to sign a new goalkeeper in January as Farke looks to support his current number one.

Meslier responded to any critics during his performance against Sheffield United on Friday (18 October), where he managed to keep a clean sheet as they won 2-0.

The shot-stopper made 46 touches throughout the game, boasting two saves and 15 recoveries.

“The manager will stand by him,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“The dressing room will have gathered around him.

“The best thing he can do is just get out there and play, the international break came at the worst time for him.

“You just want another game, you want to get it out of the way, just get playing.

“You’ve got him mentally strong, put it behind you, he’s a top-quality goalkeeper.

“He’s had his ups and downs at Leeds but from a wider perspective over a long period he’s a good goalkeeper.

“You look at the amount of games that he’s played, he’s matured, he’s always linked to other clubs, I don’t think he’ll have a problem I really don’t.

“He’s at an age where he’ll put that behind him, after Friday night when the game’s finished it’s all done and forgotten about until the videos come out at the end of the season.”
