Alex Bruce has tipped Jamie Shackleton to be a main member of the Leeds United squad in the Premier League next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds defender believes the 20-year-old has proven his ability in recent weeks after being handed more game time by Marcelo Bielsa.
The young midfielder started for just the fifth time in the league this season against Derby County and scored his first goal for the Whites.
He netted his second goal just days later after he came on as a substitute against Charlton in Leeds’ 4-0 win.
Bruce believes that despite a lack of regular game time at Elland Road, Shackleton could be kept on board as a valuable asset for Bielsa when they make their long-awaited Premier League return.
Asked if he thought Shackleton could be loaned out next season, Bruce told Football Insider: “You never know, I’m a big believer that you never know how someone’s going to do in the big leagues until you get the opportunity.
“When you’re young, hungry and a local lad, sometimes with better players and playing against better players it can bring you on a little bit.
“We’ll have to wait and see but with his performance levels, the way they’ve been the last couple of weeks, it wouldn’t surprise me if they also want him in and around the squad.”
Shackleton made his debut as a substitute against Derby back in August 2018, while his first start came in a League Cup win over Bolton Wanderers just days later.
A versatile player, Shackleton has featured as both a central midfielder and a right-back under Marcelo Bielsa.
In other Leeds United news, Bruce claims the Whites have been dealt a “kick in the teeth” after exit fee agreed.
