'I'm hearing whispers'- Exclusive: Pundit suggests Arsenal close to signing Celtic player

Noel Whelan has urged Odsonne Edouard to prove he is serious about winning 10-in-a-row by signing a new Celtic contract amid “whispers” of growing Arsenal interest.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims it is a “nervy time” for Hoops fans when it comes to their star striker’s future.

Speaking to Celtic TV earlier this week, Edouard appeared to hint that he was planning on staying at Parkhead for next season by stating “I hope that we can win this title for 10 in-a-row.”

He also revealed his desire to sink Rangers once again, naming his goal at Ibrox in September as one of his highlights of the season.

Neil Lennon has revealed that Celtic are in talks with the striker’s representatives over a new deal at Parkhead, with his future the subject of much speculation this summer.

Whelan believes that if Edouard is serious about playing a part in a historic season for the Bhoys, then he should put pen to paper and commit.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think there’s a question mark right now because of how good he’s been at Celtic – I’m hearing whispers of Arsenal and other teams in the English Premier League being interested.

“There’s always that worry but there’s that worry in the Premier League as well – if you’re doing well there’s always going to be people sniffing about and looking. That’s just part and parcel of a good player and a goal scorer.

“It’s one of those nervy times between now and the start of next season that every fan goes through. If he’s that adamant he wants to be part of that (10 in a row), then there shouldn’t be too many discussions going on, he must have made his decision.

“If it’s coming down to financial, there’s just no way that Celtic can compete with the English top-four, they just can’t.

“If he really wants it and this is what he’s coming out and saying, and he’s not just saying it to pacify and please people, put pen to paper and get it done then.”

Arsenal have already paid big money for one Celtic player after prising Kieran Tierney from Parkhead last summer for a fee of £25million.

In other Celtic news, Whelan claims that a shock plan for the Bhoys and Rangers is a “fantastic idea”.
