‘I’m probably going to upset Tottenham fans’ – Finance expert issues post-Daniel Levy transfer update
Tottenham’s Champions League performance this season will play a massive part in dictating their transfer business in January.
That is the verdict of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that a takeover could have a big impact in changing their transfer approach.
Daniel Levy departed Tottenham on 4 September after 25 years as the club’s chairman and has been replaced by Peter Charrington.
Despite the businessman being renowned for his frugality, Tottenham spent big on the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons this summer, in large part thanks to their Champions League qualification after beating Man United in the Europa League final.
But if Spurs fans are hoping that their side may push the boat out financially in the coming windows under new leadership, they may have to think again.
Tottenham unlikely to change transfer approach
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley explained that Tottenham‘s transfer approach was likely to remain similar to the one that had been employed by Levy.
He said: “I’m probably going to upset Tottenham fans here, but I don’t think they will [spend more with Levy now gone].
“I think in the short term, I think they’ll continue to manage Spurs in the way that they’re set up.
“What I would say with that is, they’ve had a positive start to the season, and the Champions League will be a big factor; getting out of the league phase will be a priority.
“We might see them, dependent on where they are in the league, look to do something in January, but I think that will be more league-dependent and Champions League-dependent.
“I think what will probably shift the dial in terms of maybe more significant spending in the future, for me, will be a takeover.
“I think under the current hierarchy, they won’t change things too much, but I think a takeover could be the next shift for that football club.”
West Ham and Everton lead race for Yves Bissouma
Away from the chaos at the boardroom level, Spurs still have plenty of work to do on Thomas Frank‘s side over the coming windows.
Yves Bissouma was linked with an exit in the summer, but failed to agree a move away from the North London side.
The former Brighton man was dropped from Spurs’ Premier League opener against Burnley for being late to training.
West Ham and Everton lead the race for Bissouma, Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively, and the 29-year-old is likely to depart Tottenham in the winter transfer window.
