Noel Whelan believes that Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho will have already made an approach for Chelsea winger Willian on a free this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that the possibility of the South American making the move across London in the summer was not out of the realms of reality
The Sun report that the 31-year-old would be keen on a reunion with his former boss at the end of the season, with his current deal at Stamford Bridge set to expire.
With the end of the season edging ever closer, Whelan believes that Mourinho will already have set the wheels in motion over a potential switch.
“Every club wants quality players – he is a quality player and they’re a big club,” he told Football Insider.
“He’ll be available on a free at the end of the season. You can’t sign a pre-contract yet, but you can approach a player – I’m sure Mourinho has already done that, to be quite honest with you.
“He likes the player, he’s got loads of talent. Whether or not the player would want to go from Chelsea remains to be seen, but I don’t see why not. I don’t think Chelsea would begrudge him going to Tottenham.”
Willian has been a regular feature for Frank Lampard’s men so far this term, making 32 appearances in all competitions.
He will be free to leave the club at the end of the current campaign if he does not agree to a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
